Lily was a 10-year old girl who use to stay in our neighbourbood. She was a very chirpy and vivacious child.
But one day when I was coming back home , I heard a soft sound of someone weeping. I went few steps forward and found Lily crying. I immediately hugged her and asked her the reason for her dampened mood.
The reason Lily gave for her weeping shocked me to the core. She told me that , that day in her school she had a Value education class. In that class her teacher taught her that smoking is very injurious to health and if one does not quit it timely , its consequences could be fatal. She later went ahead to emphasise on the reason why she was crying.
She said that even her father use to smoke daily. After knowing that smoking was injurious to health , she came came home and confronted her father, but he, instead of taking her advice seriously, he asked her to keep her mouth shut and leave.
After consoling her and sending her home, I thought about this matter deeply. It made me think how insensitive her father was, that he did not even try to understand what her real concern was.
That innocent soul was only worried that she might lose her father to smoking and that is why she tried to explain him to quit his noxious habit of smoking. Thats is when I decided to help Lily.
The next morning I got ready and went to Lily's house. Lily opened the door and seeing her naive smile I promised myself that I would at any cost make her father quit smoking for her happiness sake. When I went inside, her fathet was smoking a cigarette.
I went upto him and told him that I wanted to talk to him about something very serious. He readily agreed and put off his cigarette before listening to me.
I started with narrating the previous day's incident. He was shocked to know that his behaviour and habits had so profoundly hurt Lily. I told him, " Smoking is nothing but an addiction which only has adverse effects. You and your love is the most valuable possesion of Lily. Addiction may not kill the addict, but it kills the family, kids and people who tried to help. You are a role model for her. Her little gullible eyes are always on you. I am not telling you it is going to be easy, I am telling you it is going to be worth it. Please bring an end to this self destruction as there is someone who cares for you." I said the last part pointing towards Lily.
Seeing her, tears welled up in his eyes. Those tears were a mixture of regret, apology and hope to start afresh.
That day onwards her father never even touched a cigarette and finally Lily's notion that her father was her superhero without a cape, turned out to be a reality of her life.
