Battlefiend

How did the soldiers cope with the grief?

Seeing their buddies blown to bits

Wondering when it would be them

The next shell with their name on it

Not having the time to be sad or cry

For a war had to be won

England was against the wall

And Churchill called for results

Fight the Nazis no matter the cost

But if was individual soldiers

Who felt the pain and carried the burden

So many killed crossing this field

A dozen lost battling for this road

Individual ones hit by sniper fire

Or maimed by landmines

Each cost adding to the grief

And a nation’s pain in war

Twice in a bloody century

An almost unknown figure

Wounded, killed or missing

Their mates carrying the grief

For their lost pals in a crazy war

Boys made men on the battlefield

Seeing, doing and experiencing

Things that will haunt them for life

Those who survive…
